Weymouth in old postcards and photographs

Wooden Pier New Extension circa 1933

This picture clearly shows the extension of the Wooden Pier completed in 1933 and opened by the Prince of Wales, later Edward 8th. One of the few cards in my collection with stamps bearing his head, obviously printed before his abdication.

The scan does not do justice to the detail visible, for we have a GWR Saddle Tank Steam Engine at the head of the coaches of a Boat Train Express from Paddington. The crane nearest the camera is about to lift a pallet from the parcels van into the St. Helier as the ship prepares to leave for The Channel Islands.

At the end of the Pier a Cosens paddle Steamer is moored.

In the background the extension to the Old Stone Pier is seen.
