Weymouth in Old Postcards and Photographs

The Donkeys

No seaside resort was complete without Donkey rides.

The Downton family were responsible for these animals for nearly four generations.

So much is captured of seaside life before the First World War.

We have a wonderful view of the Bathing Machines, one of which can still be seen in the Weymouth Museum. The Ice Cream man, known then as 'The Hokey Pokey Man' and his barrow are clearly visible.

The Magnificent Seven (sorry nine) on their steeds look very stern, and could that be Lord Snooty with the straw hat?
