Weymouth in old postcards and photographs

The Swannery circa 1900

The Swans must be one of the most popular attractions down the years.
The feeding of these elegant birds remains as strong today, as does the appetite of the Swans.
This is Commercial Road almost opposite the Bus Station Entrance and not far from the roundabout where the new McCarthy & Stone flats development is sited.
Clearly visible is the old wooden trestle bridge which carried the railway to Portland.
The Backwater has yet to be reclaimed and Melcombe Regis Station was not yet built, thus trains started and terminated from Weymouth Station requiring a reversal into the Station.
The tramway to the Harbour is also visible on the right of the picture..
