Weymouth in old postcards and photographs

The Sluice Gardens
The Sluice Gardens, left, are situated at the northern end of The Esplanade.
Today, the view is very different, take a look how the area appeared in the 1950s.
The Bothy, as it was known, with the thatched roof has long since disappeared and the area around the central raised flower bed was converted
to a paddling pool.
A row of neat chalets was constructed facing East.
The hills in the distance have disappeared under housing and the area in between, for so long an undeveloped site, has become a wild life and bird sanctuary.
Less than a half mile from the Bothy was a Turnpike Cottage occupied by Mr. Shorey who sold logs from a horsedrawn cart in the years just after World War 2. As I recall his nickname was 'Sugar'em' I would love to know why. I can recall riding alongside him after he had delivered in our street and the aroma from the wood and the horse lingers in my memory
