The
Shambles Lightship

The
Shambles is a sandbar close to Weymouth and Portland, many would have
seen the distinctive light from this vessel winking in the distance.
I can recall the Mayor's Annual Christmas journey in the company of Santa Claus aboard the Weymouth Lifeboat, carrying festive parcels to the men who manned the light. The weather conditions the crew must have endured can only be wondered at. The Lightship was withdrawn in 1976 and replaced with two high-tech buoys. Mrs. Galbraith from Worcester has provided me with some fascinating facts about her Great Grandfather, George Tracy, who worked on the Lightship in 1881. |
