The
Pavilion Theatre was built on reclaimed land and opened in 1908.
Constructed almost entirely from wood, it was a fine looking building and was used as a venue for the traditional seaside summer shows. It was closed as a place of entertainment for the duration of the Second World War and became part of HMS Bee as the Royal Navy's establishment at Weymouth Quay was known. In 1943 with the arrival of the Americans and as part of the build-up to D-Day HMS Bee transferred to the American Navy and became the USS Grasshopper to be used as a store for K-rations. |
