The Kings Statue circa 1950
In this view from the 1950s we can see the re-laid lawns,flowerbeds and walkways around the Kings Statue.
The bus stops nearest the sands on the left of the picture served the Westham Area with those on the outside serving Portland via Rodwell, usually a through service from Upwey. The stop in the lower right being for the same service in the opposite direction. The bus stops in the top right are for Chickerell Road, Lanehouse and Wyke Road.
W. H. Smith still has the open Bookstall and you can just make out the Clinton Arcade in St. Thomas' St. with the large advertisement for William Whittles Florists in the top right.
The two distinctive bow fronted houses provide a suitable Georgian background for the man who did so much to promote Weymouth as a Health Spa.
The Royal Baths were located just a few doors below W.H. Smith in St. Thomas' St., surviving into the '30s when they were demolished and replaced by The Clinton Arcade. The latter having now also disappeared to be replaced by shops.
