Weymouth in old postcards and photographs

Sand Castle Building

The sand at Weymouth is known internationally for the quality of modelling that can be achieved. I believe it is the combination of the particular type of sand with salt water that enables such detail and quality.

In this picture children of all ages are taking part in the regular sandcastle building competitions. Perhaps that is a model of the lighthouse at Portland inspired by a visit.

In my childhood the modelling of cathedrals were a wonder. Fred Darrington's creations always drew a large crowd who would compete to throw pennies into a canvas covered bucket and thus ring a bell.
My personal favourite was always Salisbury Cathedral.
