In
this photo from the early 1900s we have a part of the Park District.
This is Windsor Terrace, later to become 17 to 24 Brownlow Street and we are looking towards Lennox Street. The development of this land between the Seafront and Backwater began in 1861. The description 'Park District' originates from the earlier plan to develop this area as parkland. The first developments took place in Lennox St. and Walpole Street. The original plans were drawn up naming the various streets after well-known Statesmen of the day. However building did not proceed on a street by street basis, various Terraces and Parades were built and named, the renumbering by streets did not occur until the early 1900s. |
