Weymouth in old postcards and photographs

Greenhill Gardens early 1900s

This is, I believe, a very early picture of Greenhill Gardens taken from a position close to where the Supermarine Memorial stands.

In virtually every other view I have there is an increasing number of flower beds. The hedgerows were perhaps constructed as protection from the sea breezes.

After the Monmouth Rebellion Judge Jeffreys ordered the construction of Gallows at Greenhill for the execution of twelve men whose heads. limbs and quarters were then displayed around the Town and surrounding villages.
One Shilling and sixpence(seven and a half pence today) was spent on a set of posts for displaying these gory trophies in one part of Weymouth.
