Weymouth In Old Postcards and Photographs

The Esplanade Circa 1885

This is one of the oldest photographs in my collection.

Clearly visible is Stacies Hotel, demolished in 1891 and replaced with The Royal Hotel in 1897.

This view was taken between 1878 when the Tea Cabin, then known as The Cab Mens Shelter, was opened and 1888. The latter date being when The Jubilee Clock & Tower was completed.

There is a gap in the Esplanade bounded by the railings where the large poster Site is standing, presumably to allow access and egress to the sands by the Bathing saloons.
