This is a scene of perfect relaxation with deck chairs, tents and pleasure boats.

Difficult to imagine the scene almost a hundred years earlier when the sea swept over this spit of land, known then as 'The Narrows', during 'The Great Gale' of November 23rd. 1824.

Two men trying to cross here at that time were killed. It was only this slender piece of land which then separated the sea from the Backwater.

The Burdon Bandstand can be seen and there is a horse drawn cart into which a man appears to be shovelling something, seaweed perhaps?
